Because fear is an instinctive emotion, we must learn to live with it. However, anyone whose fears run-wild probably wishes that they could rid themselves of fear. But, when we pause and consider the value of fear, we realize that fear can and has helped us. For example, being “cautious” (a form of fear) is justified when a threat to life or safety arises. So, we don’t want to become so ‘fearless’ that we harm ourselves or others.
Nonetheless, we fully understand (by observing others and ourselves) that the vast majority of our “fears” have been either over-reactions to past experiences or self-created, due to ignorance or insecurity. This is why we sometimes ask someone else, “Why are you afraid of that?” Their fear makes no sense to us, but to them it seems perfectly reasonable.
One thing we know about “manufactured fears” is that they prevent us from experimenting, growing, changing and dealing effectively with challenges, needs, problems or goals. And, such fears also interfere with our health – mentally, emotionally and physically.
In this lesson, Reverend Sherman will show you six ways to deal with fears – whether they are instinctive or were just made-up.

“The Human Mind – Brain vs. Mind”

For psychologists, psychiatrists and scientists, the human mind will likely remain an “enigma” for a very long time. The human mind will remain an “enigma” because medicine and science believes that the “mind “ is in the “brain” – or, that the brain is the mind. Fortunately, this won’t slow the pace of new medical discoveries, or advancements in treatments – but a full understanding of “mind” will still be lacking.
As a physical organ, the human brain has significant limitations. In terms of time, it can imagine past and future, but it can only “be” in the present moment. In terms of location, it can only “be” where one’s body happens to “be”. Whatever knowledge is held in one’s brain, is all it can work with.
Once you realize that your mind is bigger than your brain, possibilities abound. In reality, because your mind is actually an offshoot of Divine Mind, there are no limitations.
Sunday’s lesson is about your magnificent mind and the endless things that it can do with and for you.

“The Key of ‘Honor’”

As a character trait, “honor” stands amongst the highest of human virtues. The first four Commandments concern our relationship with God, and the other six concern our relationship with people.
The fifth Commandment is “Honor your father and mother”. “Honor” is about “respect”. “Respect” is the “secret ingredient” underlying all of the Commandments.
“Honor” is something we are instructed to give through our thoughts, feelings, words, actions and reactions. A person who consistently “honors” God and others is rightly called “honorable”.
People who are cited for exceptional bravery are given “honors”, such as firefighters, police officers, soldiers and others. So too, those who have made significant contributions to the human family, such as scientists, medical researchers, etc. their efforts are lauded.
The Book of Proverbs expresses a contrasting truth: “We no more give honors to fools than we pray for snow in summer or rain during harvest”. The writer meant that “honor” must be honestly earned.

“The Key of Sincerity”

“Virtues” refer to positive character-traits in people. “Virtuous” people teach their children to become virtuous. No doubt, you were taught many virtues, such as telling the truth, not stealing and following the Golden Rule.
Human beings did not “make-up” the necessity for virtues. Today, some say that every human belief and behavior originated with people in the past, meaning, ancient people “made-it-up”. Nothing could be further from the truth. For example, no one made-up the idea of “kindness” because kindness is rooted in Divine Love. Every human virtue is rooted in one or more Divine Ideas. Virtues arise from our spiritual nature as children of God. Nonetheless, being “virtuous” makes life better for everyone.
Jesus taught individuals how to “connect” with the living Spirit of God, within. This can happen in any other moment, whether you’re praying or when you simply sense God’s Presence. Sincerity is the ‘virtue’ that makes prayer work!

“The Key of Honesty”

A Greek philosopher named Diogenes believed that virtues were better revealed by action than theory.
Though ancient Athens was the home of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle, and most of the city’s citizenry were quite corrupt. Diogenes mocked them by carrying a lamp during the day, claiming to be looking for an honest man.
Honesty always matters! Think about it: Which is worse, self-deception or efforts to deceive others? You cannot grow spiritually unless you can be honest with yourself. And, as Diogenes pointed out, rampant dishonesty in any society harms everyone. While also jeopardizing their future.
Jesus understood the essential value of honesty. The Golden Rule provides a perfect example, “Do unto others as you would have them do to you”. Or, “You shall know the truth, and the truth will make you free”. The Bible repeatedly emphasizes the need for honesty, humanly and spiritually.
Honesty is a “KEY” to a better future in all respects. Self-improvement requires self-honesty. Honesty makes human relationships possible. And, honesty will improve your physical and mental health. In fact, freedom (inwardly and outwardly) requires truthfulness.

“Rise Above It”

At dawn on Easter morning, a few women went to the Jesus’ tomb to carry out their last devotions by anointing his dead body with spices and oils. They were shocked to find the tomb open and the body missing. None of Jesus’ followers actually expected Jesus to come back into a worldly form. This included his disciples, who were in hiding.
When the women ran and told the disciples that he had risen, none of them believed it happened.
His disciples did not believe that he was alive until they saw him physically. This illustrates why spiritual ideas are easy to accept “in theory” but quite difficult to grasp on a practical level.
In Jesus’ day, many believed that “death” was the end of a person’s life. Others professed life continues; but none believed that a person could literally “come back”. Similarly, most people didn’t believe in miracles unless they had actually witnessed or experienced one.
The Truth about life is that “miracles” can and do happen.
Easter Sunday celebrates an earth-shattering breakthrough about the reality of God’s Presence and Power in us.

Good Friday observances usually focus on two things, Jesus’ suffering before and during the Crucifixion; and how Jesus’ faith and love for God enabled him to “Rise Above It”.
Did Jesus focus on fear or, on inner peace? Did he focus on his circumstances or, on his purpose? Did he focus on personal pain or on God’s Presence? Did he focus on dying or, on living? What do you think he was thinking during the Crucifixion?
Good Friday provides an opportunity to see how Jesus moved through a succession of steps that paved the way for the miracle of Easter morning. The words he spoke from the Cross show the steps he took inwardly to “Rise Above” conditions-of-the-moment and experience something that others believed to be impossible.

“It’s Going to be Alright”

“Palm Sunday,” commemorates Jesus’ return to Jerusalem after a long absence. Jerusalem was not a safe place for Jesus or his Disciples. Fully aware of the circumstances, he told his disciples exactly what would unfold: 1) he would be arrested, 2) convicted, 3) executed, and, then 4) on the third day, rise from the dead.
Peter strongly objected, but Jesus said, “Peter, you stand right in my path when you look at things from man’s point of view and not from God’s point of view.”
In effect, Jesus was telling Peter, “I know that you don’t understand this now, but, we’ll come through it and we’re going to be alright.” Though his Disciples couldn’t see anything good happening, Jesus asked them to trust him and witness the eventual outcome.
If you ever faced a seemingly impossible problem, you know that “logic” often insists that nothing good lies ahead. Jesus needed to prove to them that “with God all things are possible”. He wanted them to know ordinary logic will never see the great goodness that God has in store for them, or for us.
When we see “from God’s point of view” instead of from “our point of view,” we never fear the future.

“The Key of Humility”

Among a list of human virtues, humility presents unique challenges. For example, parents want their children to be successful, self-reliant and confident; but, at the same time, they don’t want them to be ‘show offs’ or act ‘too proud of themselves’. Later, as they mature and display increasing self-confidence, they may be told they’re getting ‘too big of an ego’. What are they supposed to do if they’re receiving an honor at a public award ceremony? Should they act shy and timid or let their joy shine?
‘Ego’ is one of many names of your personal ‘sense of self’. Everyone has an ‘ego’ – including Jesus! When was he shy, timid or afraid of showing joy or exhibiting confidence? Never! Do you think his critics would have ever liked him, under any circumstances? In the ordinary world, genuine humility is an asset.
On the spiritual side, humility is an essential ‘state of being’ that Jesus encouraged through his teachings and examples. Inner ‘humility’ sets the stage for ‘miracles’ to happen. ‘Humility’ is one of the keys to effectual prayer.

“The Key to Inner Peace”

Since its formation, this planet has been the home for untold varieties of life-forms – from the most microscopic to the most humongous in size – from the gentlest to the most ferocious – from the most beautiful to the most inelegant. Though relatively new to the mix, human beings stand apart in multiple ways.
Among our greatest human assets is our ability to THINK and UNDERSTAND in ways distinctive from the animal-kingdom. This human ability to “conceptualize” is one of our greatest strengths and greatest weaknesses. Our power to “conceptualize” enables us to formulate “beliefs.” We rely upon our “beliefs” to help us get along in daily life. “Beliefs” also help us develop our relationship with God.
But, this ability to “conceptualize” can also result in the formation of many “false beliefs.” “False beliefs” complicate our lives. “False beliefs” represent a road-block to inner peace. Fortunately, our teachings provide many practical tools for neutralizing the effects of “false beliefs”.
Think about these three words: LIFE IS CONSCIOUSNESS! This simple-sounding statement identifies the key to inner peace — and also to our health, happiness and freedom.

Meditation as a ‘State of Being’ [Part 2]

Meditation, in its highest form, transcends everything we think we know and understand about the world. In a crisis, everyone longs for a ‘saviour’. Being worldly-minded, most look outside first. If spiritually-minded, they will probably turn to prayer, hoping for a ‘miracle.’
Jesus did not hope! He knew how to do ‘something’ that led to what people called a ‘miracle’. Interestingly, Jesus himself described it as being ‘about his Father’s business’. Jesus was not the first person in the Bible to do such things and he wasn’t the last.
Meditation, in its highest form leads to ‘miracles’ and, literally, anyone can become the ‘instrument’ through which they happen. It’s all about a special ‘state of being’.

One major difference between city-life and country-life is called ‘artificial noise’. In rural areas, where people often live far apart, the dominant noises come from nature. City-life, on the other hand, is typically filled with non-stop human-created clamour, such as sirens, horns and trucks. Hence, country people can’t sleep when they come to the city and city people can’t sleep because the country is too quiet.
A different kind of “noise” exists that no one’s ears can hear. Inner fears, doubts, worries, complaints, insecurities and other such ‘concerns’ produce “silent noises” that ring so loudly that a person can’t think, plan, sleep or function. These kinds of “noise” can make efforts to meditate impossible.
Meditation, at its highest level, leads to a remarkable “state of being” found only through “inner silence”. This is, perhaps, why pioneers in the New Thought movement called this special state “The Silence”.
